The raw numbers have always been public: the ONS publishes the public sector finances monthly, the OBR forecasts debt and the interest bill twice a year, and the Commons Library briefs MPs on both. What did not exist was a public-facing, evergreen resource that translated them for a general reader: where the debt stands, what servicing it costs (over one hundred billion pounds a year, more than the entire defence budget), and what that bill crowds out. The data was open; the understanding was not. Informed dialogue about any fiscal choice is impossible while the scale of the debt and its servicing cost stay invisible to the people paying it. Every budget line the public argues about is smaller than the interest bill nobody can see, and a generation is inheriting commitments it never authorised without a plain account of what they amount to.
